Sol Budinger hit a half-century as Nottinghamshire Seconds made a positive start to their Second XI Championship game against Durham at Richmondshire CC.

Budinger’s quickfire innings have been a staple feature of victories for the Academy this season, but his first fifty of the seconds’ campaign was a more circumspect affair, with his score of 58 arriving off 65 balls.

The 19-year-old had arrived at the crease with the score on 67-3, after the departures of triallist Mitchell Todd (0), Liam Patterson-White (22) and Chris Gibson (27).

Budinger was then able to build a solid 70-run partnership with Lyndon James before the latter was removed by Oli Gibson for 31.

Contributions from Sam Hall (15), Ben Bullimore (24) and Jayden Schadendorf (15) moved Notts past the 200 mark before they were bowled out, the visitors’ innings finishing on 221.

Josh Coughlin, younger brother of Notts all-rounder Paul Coughlin, was the pick of the Durham bowlers with figures of 3-54.

The home side's innings began conservatively after tea, with a tight spell of bowling from Mark Footitt (1-18 from ten overs) producing the breakthrough when Michael Jones edged behind for 18.

Patterson-White was able to add two further scalps before the close of play to leave Durham 92-3 at the end of an intriguing first day.
