England's women secured a 61-run victory in the first contest of their Ashes defence in Australia, thanks to a disciplined bowling performance in the final innings.

Set a target of 184 to win, the hosts were pinned down by the English bowlers, all four sharing the wickets between them. Anya Shrubsole and Kate Cross claimed three each, while Katherine Brunt and Nottinghamshire's Jenny Gunn took two.

Ellyse Perry high-scored for Australia with 31, while six players failed to reach double figures.

This final innings performance followed a strong showing from Gunn with the bat, her 44 tipping the scales firmly in England's favour.

This was the only Test in this format for the women's Ashes, which will now be decided by three One Day Internationals and Twenty 20 contests. It was, however, the most valuable in terms of points - awarding England six with the remaining matches worth two apiece.
