Harry Gurney’s heroics at Hove ensured his name will forever feature in the list of Nottinghamshire bowlers who have taken a hat-trick for the county in first class cricket.
The left-armer brought a swift end to the Sussex first innings by removing Ben Brown, James Anyon and Monty Panesar in consecutive deliveries – all courtesy of fine slip catches.
In completing the feat, Gurney became the first to do it for Notts since Charlie Shreck, who pouched three Middlesex wickets in succession at Lord’s in 2006.
Gurney’s hat-trick was only the 27th ever recorded by a Notts bowler and only the tenth since the end of the Second World War.
Only three of the previous nine had been left-arm quickies, like Gurney.
They were Alan Walker in 1956, Barry Stead in 1972 and Chris Tolley in 1997.
Others to have completed the feat since 1945 have been Ken Smales, Mike Taylor, Eddie Hemmings (pictured), Richard Hadlee and Paul Franks.
