Second XI Struggle Against
Lancashire

Match Report | 8th August 2013

Nottinghamshire’s Second XI found progress difficult through the second day of their SEC match against Lancashire, their first innings closing on 161 before the follow on was enforced.

Looking to restrict the hosts from adding much to their overnight total of 398-6, Brett Hutton had Livingstone caught behind for 149, after adding six to their score.

Hutton then claimed his second of the day, McKiernan following in similar fashion to Livingstone for 12, before trialist Chambers tied up proceedings. First he bowled Bailey for 30, before having Gower caught at midwicket by Sam Wood. Lancashire’s innings closed on 455, with Maurice Chambers’ 3-74 the pick of the bowlers.

Notts lost opener Azad early, caught behind off Griffiths, and the same man saw off Tom Rowe for 14 and Sam Wood with his next ball. Eight overs in, and Notts had 26 for the loss of three wickets, but Kelsall and trialist Greg Platten saw the session through, closing on 49-3.

The break did wonders for the hosts, Proctor bowling Platten in the first over of the afternoon session, before trapping Kelsall for 16. After seeing off Tillcock in the same way in the 21st over, Notts were 75-6. Cross was bowled, before Bacon became Proctor’s fourth victim, before Ben Phillips joined Brett Hutton and the pair took the score from 80-8 to 161 before Hutton was caught off Ghaus two runs shy of his 50.

Luke Wood went two balls later, the innings closing with no further addition. Ben Phillips was the last man in, unbeaten on 29, with Proctor’s 4-18 the pick of the bowlers.

After enforcing the follow-on, Notts were still 294 behind. Azad went early, caught off Griffiths, before Newby had Tom Rowe caught in the seventh over. At 18-2 Sam Wood joined Kelsall, but was caught for 10 off Newby. Kelsall fought his way to 35 before being caught in the gully off Proctor in the 22nd over, Notts 67-4.

Platten and Matt Cross took the score to 98, before the latter ran himself out for 20. Adam Tillcock took to the crease and saw the remaining four overs out, ending the day 108-5.
