Former Hampshire batsman Chris Benham will play Second Eleven cricket for Nottinghamshire as Mick Newell looks to ease ongoing injury concerns in his squad.

Benham made his Surrey debut in 2004 and has averaged 27.31 in 48 first class matches.

"We have him playing in the second team and will have a look at him,” said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

"We are short of players at the moment and we are asking players to bat out of position but we’re hopeful that some of our injured players will be available for selection quite soon.”

Alex Hales (jaw), Graeme White (broken finger), Neil Edwards (broken wrist) won’t feature in Wednesday’s floodlit Clydesdale Bank 40 game against Gloucestershire Gladiators at Trent Bridge whilst Graeme Swann and Stuart Broad have no further scheduled domestic appearances having returned to international duty.

Andy Carter remains sidelined with an abdominal injury and Newell is keen to carefully manage the workload of his fast bowlers.
