Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell will turn to Alex Hales and Akhil Patel after learning that overseas batsman Adam Voges will be unavailable for the remainder of the season.

Voges has been added to the Australia squad for the NatWest One Day Series against England and will also feature in the ICC Champions Trophy in South Africa, ruling him out of the climax of Nottinghamshire’s season in the LV County Championship and NatWest Pro40.

Hales scored 150 not out in Saturday’s game against Worcestershire whilst Patel, the younger brother of Samit, has excelled in the Second Eleven.

“I’m not surprised by Adam’s call-up because he’s had a terrific season but it does leave us thin on the ground,” said Newell.

“We’ll name our best possible side in the LV County Championship fixtures but we’ll give opportunities to younger players in NatWest Pro40 because we need to find out if they are capable of making the step up.

“Alex Hales’ knock on Saturday was one of the best one day innings I’ve seen and Akhil has been very consistent with the bat this season.”

Patel scored 117 as Notts Academy beat Glapwell on Monday to secure promotion to the Notts Premier League.
