Newell's England Playing For Pride In Bangladesh

Featured News | 29th October 2009

Mick Newell will ask England Under 19s to restore some pride after a run of defeats gave Bangladesh an unassailable 4-0 lead in the one day series he has been seconded to manage.

The Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket has been impressed by the application of his charges in difficult conditions but admits they weren’t prepared for the unique characteristics of Bangladeshi pitches.

“Home advantage has told because the Bangladesh players know how to play the conditions better than we do,” said Newell.

“We’ve faired well against their seamers but 35 of 50 overs have been spin. We haven’t been blown away and we only lost the first game by one run it’s not easy to adapt quickly.

“We’ve got three more games to play and it’s important that we use them as an opportunity to restore some pride. The experience gained on the tour will be invaluable and hopefully we can finish on a high.”

The three remaining fixtures take place on Saturday, Monday and Wednesday before the squad return to England.
