Will Jefferson’s highest one-day score for Notts was not enough to save the Outlaws from defeat as they tumbled to a six-wicket loss at the hands of Hampshire.

A devastating opening spell from England all-rounder Dimitri Mascarenhas, making his first appearance from the season after returning from the IPL, proved far too good for the Notts top order as they collapsed to 50-6.

A seventh-wicket partnership of 94 between Jefferson and Paul Franks avoided total embarrassment but the Notts total of 202 looked a difficult one to defend, and so it proved as Hampshire cantered to victory with more than six overs to spare.

Mascarenhas struck in his first two overs to remove openers Mark Wagh and Ali Brown while Alex Hales, Adam Voges, Samit Patel and Chris Read all fell cheaply.

Jefferson and Franks were left with no choice but to accumulate the runs in a bid to use up their 50 overs, and both batted sensibly to bring the score close to respectability.

Franks reached 50 before he was caught trying to hit Billy Taylor over the top, while Jefferson opened his shoulders near the end to hit two sixes before he was last out in the final over, bowled by Dominic Cork for 93.

Early wickets were needed to give Notts any hope but Hampshire openers Michael Lumb and John Crawley kept the scoreboard ticking over, reaching 68 before Crawley was out.

Ryan Sidebottom bowled tidily to pick up 2-39 from his 10 overs but Hampshire were able to pace themselves to their target comfortably despite Read’s attempts to rotate the attack.

Director of Cricket Mick Newell gave an honest assessment of the performance and said: “We have to hold our hands up and say that wasn’t good enough.

“Our batting was pretty ordinary in the first 15 overs and we left ourselves with a heck of a task which proved too much in the end.

“Will and Franksie played well and showed it was a pretty good pitch - we certainly didn’t have any excuses on that front - but it also showed that we were probably 50 or 60 runs short of a decent total.

“It was good to see Will get runs and he’s done a good job in a different position from his usual role as opener. We want to give Alex Hales a run at three in the order, so the only space in the line-up for Will is down at six.

“He can hit the ball well and is capable of batting there. With three games to go, we won’t be making any major changes to the order, so he will be continuing in that position for at least those matches.”
