England captain Paul Collingwood calmed any worries about the fitness of Nottinghamshire spinner Graeme Swann after England got their preparations for the ICC World Twenty20 underway with a six-wicket win over Scotland at Trent Bridge.

On another beautiful day in Nottingham, the second set of warm-up matches for the tournament went smoothly with Sri Lanka beating Bangladesh in an exciting finish before England took on the Auld Enemy.

Notts stars Ryan Sidebottom and Stuart Broad both took part in the game and bowled economically, but Swann was rested to give Yorkshire leg-spinner Adil Rashid his first taste of international cricket.

Scotland were restricted to 136-5 after winning the toss and batting first, with Collingwood picking up two wickets and Broad running out Neil McCallum with a smart turn and throw. Craig Smith top-scored for the Scots with 45.

In reply England openers Ravi Bopara and Luke Wright started slowly but had just begun to increase the tempo when Wright was caught at the second attempt by Majid Haq at mid-off.

Bopara hit four fours and a six before he gave Haq the first of two wickets in two balls. But Kevin Pietersen returned from his Achilles injury with a match-winning 53 not out, closing out the game with a six over square leg.

After the match, Collingwood said: “I’m delighted with how the boys have done, they stuck to their task and used their heads to get us over the line.

“It’s hard to play against the minnows as they have nothing to lose. There are a couple of areas we need to work on, although we bowled well at the start and the end of the Scotland innings.

“But we will need to hit our straps much harder when we start the competition proper on Friday.”

Collingwood added that there might be times when two spinners would need to be used and he wanted to give Rashid some exposure in a warm-up situation.

Swann had missed training earlier in the week with a stiff back but Collingwood added: “Swann could have played but we wanted to see how Adil got on. He’ll be disappointed with some of the boundaries he conceded but the great thing is he will learn from that and be better prepared for the next match.”
