Somerset opener Neil Edwards will join Nottinghamshire next season after agreeing terms on a three year deal.

The signing is the result of a renewed effort from Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell to improve his side’s top order in LV County Championship cricket.

Earlier this month, Newell signed Scott Newman on loan from Surrey in a move which could yet become permanent.

“I’ve been aware of Neil since 2007 but we’ve had a close eye on him recently and he has a good record in first class cricket,” said Newell.

“It’s no secret that we’ve been looking for an opening batsmen and Neil has been stuck behind a quality opening pair at Somerset and feels that he needs a new challenge.”

Edwards was an ever-present in Somerset’s LV County Championship Division Two winning team in 2007, scoring 1,251 runs at an average of 48, but he hasn’t played a single first team game in 2009.
