Warwickshire duo Ian Bell and Jonathan Trott made amends for a poor show in the first innings with convincing innings to enhance the prospect of a draw at Trent Bridge.

Under pressure after Charlie Shreck struck early to enforce the follow-on, Bell came to the crease with Warwickshire 53-1 after Westwood edged to Voges off Ealham and was joined by Trott at 101-2 after Ant Botha’s dismissal, caught by Samit Patel at gulley off the bowling of Andre Adams.

Trott made his 3rd century of the season off 136 balls in assured fashion, striking 17 fours to enhance his prospects of a call-up for the fifth Ashes Test while Bell’s knock of 92 not out was more considered but no less impressive.

Charlie Shreck bowled economically without reward on a pitch that offered little to the Nottinghamshire attack but Ryan Sidebottom forced a breakthrough late on, removing Trott lbw for 121.

"It was pretty clear in the middle session that the pitch is getting easier to bat on but Bell and Trott played very well and may well be competing with each other for a place in the England squad," said Nottinghamshire Director of Cricket Mick Newell.

"They played very well and our bowlers found it hard going but showed patience and we're still hopeful of making progress with the new ball in the morning session.

"A draw is perhaps most likely but if we can get through them in 45 overs and chase something in the region of 240 then we're in with a chance."

Warwickshire closed on 298-3 with a lead of 105.
