Nottinghamshire’s seam quartet made a solid start to the crucial LV County Championship fixture against Hampshire, reducing the visitors to 199-9 when bad light stopped play late on day one.
Notts captain Chris Read won the toss and elected to field with the knowledge that Imran Tahir, who Hampshire previously claimed had returned to South Africa, was in the visiting line-up.
"Tahir's appearance was no surprise to us because we've had the information since Thursday," said Notts Director of Cricket Mick Newell.
"It didn't change our thinking too much because our only objective is to win the game.
"We think that days two and three will be the best to bat on and hopefully we can get in and establish a lead.
"I thought that Chris Read made all the right decisions today because he saw that Charlie and Darren didn't really threaten early on and brought on Andre and Mark who changed the game.
"I've got an eye on the other games around the country and I'll give the players any relevant information but we have to stay focussed on this game."
Mark Ealham had already seen Michael Brown caught behind when Lumb and Benham went lbw to Andre Adams.
Read took a diving catch to dismiss Michael Carberry and give Charlie Shreck his first wicket of the game and when Darren Pattinson dismissed Sean Irvine and Liam Dawson in the 40th over.
Shreck was handed the new ball in the 80th over and took a diving return catch to dismiss Chris Tremlett and tempted Dimitri Mascarenhas to chip to Will Jefferson at midwicket.
Mascarenhas (41) and Nic Pothas (44) were Hampshire’s main contributors.
