Notts bowler Ryan Sidebottom has been ruled out of England’s first one day international against India.

Sidebottom made one appearance for England in the Stanford Super Series in Antigua but has missed both of England’s warm-up games in Mumbai with an Achilles injury.

Stuart Broad was also missing from England’s defeat to a Mumbai President’s XI but England Coach Peter Moores is hopeful that he will return in for the first competitive fixture of the tour on Friday.

"If there's no reaction Stuart should be fit and available for selection,” said Moores.

“We've got a versatile squad with a lot of all-rounders so we've got quite a lot of depth in bowling that we can call on, but we're very keen for Stuart to get fit.

"Ryan's a chance for the second ODI but we are conscious of not releasing him into competitive cricket too early."

England have a gruelling schedule  in India where they will play seven one day internationals in seven cities in 19 days and Sidebottom is keen to be at his best when he makes his return to action.

"At the minute I feel really good, but the medical staff don't want to risk me and suffer a setback which could knock me back a couple of weeks,” said Sidebottom.

"I've had a bad time with injuries but there's nothing you can do about it – you've just got to get on with it.

"Steve and Fred have come back into the team and are both bowling well. But I'm just happy to be part of this bowling unit and hope I can push for a place."

Notts all-rounders Graeme Swann and Samit Patel should be assured of their places in the England side which will be announced on Thursday.
