Mark Wagh and Adam Voges raced to a 112 run partnership as Notts extended their lead at the top of Division One of the LV County Championship with a 7 wicket win over Lancashire.

The overnight target of 112 was reached after just 82 minutes of play, Voges hitting 14 fours after Sajid Mahmood dismissed Paul Franks and Matt Wood in the first over of the session.

Darren Pattinson’s six wicket haul on day one and five from Charlie Shreck in the second innings served to allay any fears that Notts would struggle without Stuart Broad and Ryan Sidebottom but Lancashire’s attack was perhaps more severely dented with notable absentees including Andrew Flintoff, James Anderson, Kyle Hogg and Glenn Chapple.

“The bowling unit has been fantastic and Darren has settled in very quickly and taken a hatful of wickets,” said Notts captain Chris Read.

“We knew we weren’t going to see much of Ryan and Stuart has developed fantastically well to win his place in the test side but Darren is giving us lively and accurate spells.

“He has played a lot of cricket but the demands of the county season are new to him so we will have to manage the way that we use him but he has a very strong action.”

Twenty wickets fell on day one, prompting the arrival of pitch inspector Tony Pigott who was happy with the conditions.

“The scores reflected the fact that it wasn’t the easiest pitch to play on but the outfield was very quick and the short boundary meant that a lot went for four,” said Read.

“Having won the Championship and faced relegation over the past few years, I know how important it is to win the low-scoring games and of course it’s nice to have made a good start but it means very little until the end of August.

“Every game is important and momentum is key and the guys are finding their feet now.

“Mark Wagh has been the model of consistency and Adam Voges took the game away from Lancashire very quickly.”
