Ryan Sidebottom has been named as the Vodafone England Player of the Year following his dominant return to international cricket.

The Notts bowler returned to the national squad last May after a six-year absence that allowed him to hone his action on the county circuit.

He has taken 53 wickets in the 12 Tests he has played since his re-call, including a memorable hat-trick against New Zealand.

"I feel I've matured and developed as a bowler and am very proud to have played a role in England's successes over the past 12 months," said Sidebottom.

"The first I knew about winning the award was when I walked into Lord's yesterday and somebody said my name was up there on the scoreboard.

"Obviously it's massive, but it's not just down to me.

“The other 10 guys have made me feel very welcome into the team, which has allowed me to get on with my job."

Sidebottom will play a key role in the npower Test series against New  Zealand which begins at Lords on Thursday.
