Ryan Sidebottom, playing for England v New Zealand this past weekend became only the fifth England bowler since World War II to achieve a hat-trick in a Test Match – Peter Loader (1957), Dominic Cork (1995), Darren Gough (1998-99) and Matthew Hoggard (2003-04) were the other four.

Some idea of the rarity of the feat can be gained from the fact that Maurice Allom (1929-30) is the only other bowler to perform the hat-trick for England v New Zealand.

Sidebottom is the first Notts-registered player in the list but one must recall in this context, Bill Voce’s three wickets in four balls for England v Australia at Sydney in December 1936.

Voce (pictured above), like Sidebottom, a left-arm fast bowler, took the wickets of Leo O’Brien, Don Bradman and Stan McCabe. All failed to score and Australia were three wickets down for just one run, they were 80 all out.
