All-rounder Samit Patel says that a winning start could be crucial if Notts Outlaws are to progress to the knockout stage of the Twenty20 Cup.

Notts have a solid record in the competition having reached the quarter-finals last season and the final in 2006 and with a deep batting line-up and a wealth of bowling options, Patel is confident of success.

“There’s a definite buzz around the dressing room,” said Patel, who has a batting average of 24.67 in the competition.

“We’ve got a good game plan and strength in depth and we can’t wait to get started.

“The Northern Group is very strong and anyone can beat anyone which is why it is such an advantage to make a winning start.

“We have to be versatile and adapt to any situation under pressure and if we can gather momentum throughout the group stage then who knows how far we can go.”

Andre Adams is expected to make his first appearance for the Outlaws in Friday’s game against Yorkshire Carnegie and Notts supporters will have their first chance to see the side at Trent Bridge when Durham Dynamos visit on Saturday (play commences 2.30pm).

New Zealand International Chris Cairns will join Patel in the middle order if his registration is cleared by the ECB.

“Signing Chris and Andre was a great move for us because they can hit the ball out of the park and bowl handy overs,” said Patel.

“They’re tailor made for Twenty20 Cricket.”
