Swann leaves Phantoms in a spin

Graeme Swann produced the goods with bat and ball as Notts Outlaws continued their excellent start to the Twenty20 Cup with a 53-run thrashing of Derbyshire Phantoms.

Notts Outlaws 203-8 (Swann 61, Hussey 36, Fleming 25, Wagh 24)
Derbyshire Phantoms 150 (Swann 3-16, Ealham 3-26, Ferley 2-29)

Swann's 61 from 43 balls got Notts off to a flying start and with assistance from David Hussey, Stephen Fleming and Mark Wagh, the Outlaws roared to their third-highest score in Twenty20 cricket.

And although they looked set for a total closer to 220 after 15 overs, their efforts still proved far too good for Derbyshire from the moment Mark Ealham picked up two wickets in the second over of the visitors' innings.

Swann helped himself to three scalps to complete a fine all-round game, while fellow spinner Rob Ferley also enjoyed his home debut with two wickets.

And Swann said: "In the first two games I haven't scored the runs I wanted to and I was keen to change that.

"Playing against Derbyshire was a great extra incentive, and the crowd were great right from the start. That really does make a difference and drives you on."

And the 28-year-old feels there's more to come from the team, who are sitting pretty at the top of the North Group with seven points.

He added: "I know it's a cliché, but once you get on a roll it's that much easier to keep on winning. We've given ourselves the best possible start and want that to continue.

"Last year we showed what we can really do in this competition. We've got options all the way down the order with the bat - and against Derbyshire our normal big hitters didn't really get the chance to show what they can do, which means we can still improve and that bodes well."
