Newell undecided on short-term cover for Hussey

General News | 1st August 2007

Director of Cricket Mick Newell has still to decide whether he will try and sign a replacement for David Hussey following the overseas star’s call-up by Australia A.

The 30-year-old will miss a substantial chunk of the end of the season when he joins a 14-man squad to tour Pakistan.

Cricket Australia have not yet made it clear when Hussey will be required but Newell said: “We are looking at the options available to us to replace Huss, but will only go for a player who can definitely add something to the team.”

Newell is also assessing the situation with Kyle Hogg, who is on loan from Lancashire.

Both Hussey and Hogg are definitely available for next week’s LV County Championship meeting with Somerset and Newell added: “At the moment I am waiting to see how Mark Ealham is recovering from his hamstring injury before I decide whether to extend Kyle’s loan.

“After Somerset there is a week’s gap before we play Northants, by which stage we may have Ealham and possibly even Charlie Shreck back fit.

“I’m very happy with Kyle’s contribution so far and he’s done exactly what we were looking for from him.”
