Kwik Cricket and Cricket in the Community

by Eddie Burke, Cricket Development Officer

We're currently in the middle of a busy month for primary school Kwik cricket, with hundreds of girls and boys in year six competing in the Asda National Kwik Cricket competition run through the ECB.

Schools take part in district, county and regional finals before moving on to the final itself at Edgbaston. We will be hosting the county finals on June 27 at the Notts Sports Club at Lady Bay, where 15 teams will compete for the two places going onto the regional finals - and hopefully the weather will hold out!

All of the children really enjoy this fast and exciting form of the game, where they each bat for two overs a pair, allowing everyone to play a full part in the match.

Away from this tournament, we're all busy trying to expand our Cricket in the Community scheme, which currently covers 165 schools. Our aim is to work closer with schools in partnership with Nottinghamshire County Council, with their coaches going into schools and teaching the fundamentals of agility, balance, coordination and speed. This then allows us to deliver more cricket-specific lessons to most schools.

We're also very excited with a new project we are starting in September which will see every primary school given a bag of Kwik cricket equipment as well as a short two-hour inset course for teachers; this is thanks to a new sponsorship agreement with PKF.

During the two-hour inset course, the teachers will learn how all the equipment works and we will also show them a series of fun games and warm up exercises. It is very important that the children enjoy their cricket at such as young age, especially as we are always looking to produce more future cricketers for Nottinghamshire.

Over the winter our Cricket Development Manager for Performance & Excellence Stewart Burrows introduced a new Under-10s Programme, which I assist him with. The idea of this programme is to introduce training methods heavily based on movement and balance skills as well as some cricket specific work.

The idea is to make sure we have developed their athletic skills before moving on to cricket techniques and so far we are both pleased with the progress being made, with three boys now playing in the Under-11s County team.
